A participant in a protest against Netanyahu's government policies, who was interviewed on Channel 14 in order to promote "mutual dialogue," suffered according to her account a campaign of harassment and hate speech and an online smear campaign. The interviewee, clinical psychologist Dr. Nitzan Shrira, published these details in a column on the Walla website.
According to her, “For a healthy society, I believe it is essential that we be able to talk with those who do not think like us.” For that reason, she agreed to speak with a Channel 14 broadcaster who had come to cover the protest against the Netanyahu government’s abandonment of the hostages.
Channel 14 is a media platform that broadcasts government propaganda, incitement to violence and war crimes, and fake news. It is owned by Yitzhak Mirilashvili, son of oligarch Mikhael Mirilashvili.
Dr. Shrira describes how both the channel and its viewers were not interested in "mutual dialogue": her words were edited in a polarizing manner, and following the broadcast, attempts were made to harm her livelihood.
According to her, during their conversation the Channel 14 broadcaster made “detached and provocative remarks whose sole purpose was to inflame,” and the exchange itself was later broadcast on the channel “under tendentious editing that cut out substantial portions of every statement.”
Dr. Shirira recounts how “within 30 seconds of the broadcast ending, I began receiving abusive messages, threats, and phone calls at all hours of the day and night.” She describes how, following the broadcast, people “entered websites where I am listed as a professional and sent me hate messages while posing as prospective patients,” and left negative reviews in order to damage her Google rating, even though they had never been treated by her.
"It turns out this is known to anyone who dared to raise their head - teachers who voiced their protest, bereaved parents who invited their Palestinian counterparts to a joint ceremony, and anyone who takes a leading role in the demonstrations. They are immediately identified and 'dealt with'" she added.
“I am greatly distressed by these attacks; they are ugly, invasive, and unsettling. But I will not be silenced. I will not surrender to terror of any kind,” Dr. Shirira also wrote. She concluded: “I believe there are quite a few right-wing viewers of Channel 14 who do not seek the destruction of the other, whoever that may be. I hope that from among them there will arise, for their sake and for ours, a space where it will be possible to speak differently.”
